Background:

NOVUM - Newcastle Summer Festival first edition, held on 11-13 August 2023 at Newcastle's Civic Centre, was a celebration of diverse artistic expressions, featuring live music, engaging creative workshops, and the awe-inspiring Monumental Construction by Olivier Grossetête, co-created by the Newcastle community.

The pilot festival programme was centered around the iconic Civic Centre, where we created an architectural-scale attractor work with Olivier Grossetête - a cardboard monumental construction made in collaboration with over 800 community volunteers in the week preceding the festival weekend.

It also brought together more than 15 creative artists workshops for families and the public to enjoy, alongside an eclectic mix of locally rooted music artists, such as Faithful Johannes, Kindelan, Amelia Coburn, Boo, Nadedja, DJ Jacklyn, Mais Mollis and Hannabiell & Midnight Blue, with national and international peers including Lindstrøm, ORKA, Lou Hayter, Mim Suleiman, Kapil Seshasayee, Gugusar, Asha Gold and Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir. For 2024 we want to go bigger and better.

Does your work fit the bill? Let us know what you want to bring to the festival by filling in the expression of interest form below.

Brief:

The festival creates opportunities for all to celebrate and engage with diverse creative cultures within the development, production and implementation of festival events.

As we gear up for the 2024 edition on August 9-10-11, we are actively seeking large scale installations and large to medium size performances. The installations will be the main attractor of the festival, bringing audiences to the site and providing a space where people can gather, come together and participate in an engaging and fun way.

  • You must be available on all festival days - for performances, exact dates and timings TBC based on programming.

  • Installation and performances will happen outdoors - please be aware that August can have high temperatures, or high winds, or torrential rain. We need works that can be prepared for it all and teams that are accustomed to working in the public realm.

  • All materials/crew should be accounted for in your costs/budget - infrastructure will be provided by the festival.

Proposals should include:

    • an overview of your company, creative practice, or biography (150 words max);

    • an indication of the artwork/performance genre (e.g. installation, dance performance, theatre performance…);

    • a detailed outline of your proposed artwork/performance (250 words max);

    • an indication of budget (choose between the options);

    • images or videos of the artwork/performance, or similar previous work;

    • a web link to existing practice/previous work, or a social media link;

    • contact details.
